Which Bed Size Do You Need? Every NZ Bed Size Explained

Picking the right bed size seems straightforward until you're standing in a showroom, second-guessing whether a queen will actually fit your room or whether a king single is really that different from a double. Get it wrong, and you're either squeezed for space or sleeping in a bed that swamps your bedroom.

This Bed Warehouse guide covers every standard bed size in NZ, the exact dimensions, which size suits you, and how to choose the right fit for your room and lifestyle.

New Zealand Bed Sizes at a Glance

New Zealand beds come in six standard sizes, from the compact single through to the super king. Dimensions are standardised across NZ, so the measurements below apply whether you're shopping for a mattress, a base, or a new bed frame. Select a size below to see its exact dimensions.

What Each Bed Size is Best For

Knowing the dimensions is only half the picture. Here's what each size actually means in practice, who it suits, which rooms it works in, and a few things worth knowing before you buy.

Single Beds Are Practical for One

The single is the go-to for kids' bedrooms and spare rooms. Its compact footprint, 91cm wide, leaves plenty of floor space for other furniture, which makes it a practical choice for smaller rooms. It's comfortable for one person but tight for anyone over about 175cm, given its 188cm length.

King Single Beds Are the Best Option for Taller Sleepers

The king single is one of the more misunderstood sizes. It's narrower than a double but longer, which makes it a better fit for taller sleepers or teenagers who've outgrown a single. If floor space is limited but length matters, our king single mattress and base range is worth a look.

Double Beds Offer More Room Without the Big Footprint

The double is wider than a king single but shares the same 188cm length, so it suits a single adult who wants more room to spread out rather than a couple looking for long-term comfort. It's a popular choice for guest rooms, generous enough for visitors without dominating a smaller space. See our full double mattress and base range.

Queen Beds Are NZ's Most Popular Size For A Reason

The queen is the most popular bed size in NZ, and it's easy to see why. At 153cm wide and 203cm long, it comfortably fits two people while still leaving room to move around in most standard bedrooms. It's the size we'd point most couples toward as a starting point. Browse our queen mattress and base sets to see what's available.

King Beds for Those Who Want More Space

The king is 14cm wider than a queen, which doesn't sound like much, but if you or your partner moves around a lot in your sleep, that extra width makes a real difference. It suits couples who want more personal space overnight and works best in a bedroom with enough room to keep at least 70cm of clearance on each side. Take a look at our king mattress and base range.

Super King Beds Offer Maximum Space For Larger Bedrooms

The super king is the largest standard NZ bed size at 183cm wide. It's best suited to larger master bedrooms and works well for couples who want maximum space, or families who regularly share the bed with kids or pets. Because of its width, a super king often works better with a split base, two sections that join together under the mattress, making it easier to move through doorways and hallways.

How to Choose the Right Bed Size for Your Room

Once you know the dimensions, the next step is working out what fits and functions best in your space. A few practical things to consider:

  • Who's sleeping in it: A single works well for one person in a smaller room. A king single is a better call for taller kids or teenagers. For couples, a queen is the natural starting point, and if either of you tends to move around overnight, it's worth stepping up to a king for the extra width.
  • Your room dimensions: Measure before you commit. A good rule of thumb is to leave at least 70cm of clearance on three sides of the bed, enough to walk around comfortably, open drawers, and make the bed without a struggle.
  • Length as well as width: The single and double both measure 188cm, which can be a tight fit if you're over about 175cm. The king, queen, and super king all measure 203cm.
  • Getting it through the door: For larger beds, check that the base can get through your doorways and around any tight corners or stairways. A split base solves this problem for super king sizes by coming in two sections that join together once they're in the room.
